About us

Who and What is the Carel du Toit Centre?

We are a non-government organization, raising funds through our own means with community support.
NGO Number – 003-401.
Established 1973
 

Teaching deaf children to speak

Our aim is to give deaf children the opportunity to go to mainstream schools for normal hearing children.
It is a national multi-racial establishment.
It is an early intervention and a foundation phase school
Currently have191 children on the programme
68% are from the more disadvantaged communities
 
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE CAREL DU TOIT CENTRE?
The hearing ability of children is established.
If hearing loss is detected, hearing aids are fitted.
The parents receive training on how to communicate with their deaf child.
An auditory-oral approach is followed -“listen-talk” programme.
 
PRE-GRADE R AND PRIMARY SCHOOL
Curriculum based activities are followed
Classes consist of 5 – 8 learners
DEAF LEARNERS ARE TALKING
 
COMMUNITY WORK
Test the hearing ability of 350 babies monthly
Aims of the project are early identification and preventative care
 
WHAT DO WE NEED HELP WITH
Hearing aids (R20,000 each)
Transport cost (we transport 50 children daily)
